Everything about your post is on point except this. In no universe does paying help anyone but the threat actors. NEVER PAY THEM! If we truly want to stop this epidemic it starts with a simple backup plan, and a firm understanding that encouraging this behavior only escalates the problem. As long as this has been going on businesses should be wise enough to not have to worry because they have a sound backup plan.
